So, today was my last day teaching for Humanities Out There at Orange County High School. I have to admit…I was genuinely sad!
Some days I would just be like man…these kids don’t want to do shit! And I seriously didn’t know how to motivate them and it made me sooo sad how little they cared about their aspirations and their perspective on high school and high school culture. Like..I don’t remember high school sucking that badly for me…but I guess Cupertino is way different with it’s privileged school system, over-achieving Asians, and crowded plazas filled with pearl tea places, frozen yogurt, and SAT schools.
High school kids are rebellious, they act lazy and really don’t mean to give you a hard time. The way they act…that’s just literally how they are so I didn’t take it offensively. But anyways, I decided to write them all personalized encouraging notes about their futures and then..they were actually sad too! I actually felt like I made a difference in their lives and they even tucked my letters in as their binder covers which I thought was sooo sweet! It totally made my day!
I just really wanted to show them that there is a tutor that can care about them and much more than that. I truly believe in each of their potentials and hope they continue their endeavors strongly and admirably.
Definitely a wonderful experience…THE DEAN BETTER NOT CUT IT CUZ OF THE STUPID LACK OF FUNDS
Last Day in NY! :( and after thoughts
So today we all woke up at like 12 because we were exhausted from the previous night. We washed up and organized a bit because Judy’s roommate was coming back and it was literally a disaster and our clothes, shoes, jewelry, ERRTHANGG was ERRWHERE. haha
Then after finally getting dressed we walked outside and it was RAINING. which sucked expecially mixed with all the pollution and smog -__- but we went to Vanessa’s Dumplings which is this really cheap dumpling place and i got dumplings and noodle soup, then we headed over to this art supply store so Judy could get stuff for her painting class. They were having a big sale so it was crowded and we were there for like an hour. (Art supplies are freaking expensive!! Judy spent like $100 WITH the discount lol)
We came back and got umbrellas, and while Judy rested the rest of us went shopping in Union Square and it turns out there IS tax (i don’t know what other people were talking about when they said there wasn’t on sale items) its just that their sales tax is only like 8%. Then we met Judy up around St. Marks and then we ate 50% off sushi and it was gooood. Then there was this reallyy cute dessert cafe called “The Spot” and I got a chocolate mousse cake that was BOMBB. omg and then i got black and white cookies for the plane back. Judy and Sarah were tired so they stayed at the apartment while Trina, Elizabeth and I headed out.
We went to the Empire state building, but it was so foggy we could only see little bits of it!! which suckeddd (btw if you buy tickets, but don’t use them, they last for 2 years!) but it was cool. Then we decided to go to the Chrysler building and then the Rockefeller center..which turned out to be WAYYY smaller than it is on tv! like wtf. hahaha but it was still cute. And then we ate at “Little Italy’s Pizza” and I got the Ricotta, chicken pizza which was soooo good! It’s so crunchy, and chewy and the cheese was like omg. It was orgasmic. hahaha then we just walked around 5th avenue and saw the NBC studios and Sak’s 5th avenue! haha
I’m definitely going to miss New York, and there is sooo much to do. I feel like no matter how long you live here, there will and is always something to do and discover. It truly is the city that never sleeps and is always exciting. And things are always open! Unlike Cupertino..and Irvine. haha
I don’t know WHEN, but i’m positive i will come here again in my lifetime, maybe go to grad school around here or just even live here for a year or so. I’m definitely a city girl at heart and it really does feel nice to be here. I feel complete in a way. It has alll the qualities i could EVER ask for. I’m so thankful for this great experience and as Judy said, I’ll have a Californian soul and an Empire State of Mind.
